FAR EAST

taiwan cinema

The two films from Taiwan in this edition show, on the one hand, the most recent opus by one of the masters not only of Asian cinema, but especially world cinema, Tsai Ming-liang. And on the other, a film by one of the Taiwanese directors who works on genre cinema with an authorial vision, Hung-i Cheng. This time he co-directs it with debutant director Muni Wei. Likewise, Thai cinema will be represented by a brief but significant exhibition of short films that allow knowing the thematic and stylistic variety of its filmmakers.

It takes time to stop using other people's voices and start using your own," says Jit in Red Aninsri (2020), as occurs in the sound presence of Kanya and Alex flirting through time and space in Room with coconut view (2018), also coincides with DJ Dok Rak's ongoing lament over the non-existent radio in The Asylum (2016), these films suggest the ongoing (neo-)colonial sonic war and the incongruity between seen and heard. ; the negotiation between marginal subjects and the superimposed structure, which may well have control over their bodies but not over their voices, carriers of transgenerational memories, politics and nostalgia-desire.
