Born in Malaysia and educated in Taiwan, Tsai Ming-liang (Kuching, 1957) is one of the most famous and representative directors of the Second Wave of Taiwanese cinema (from 1990 onwards). His film "Viva el amor" (1994) not only gave him the Golden Lion in Venice, but also finished forging a distinctive and very personal cinema: in constant exploration of the isolation of the individual in society through scarce dialogues, and long, contemplative shots.

Recently honored at the Venice Film Festival for his magnificent career, the American director -and with Italian roots- Abel Ferrara (New York, 1951) has transferred to his cinema the deepest fears of human beings and their strong instinct for self-destruction. He has worked with great actors, such as Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken and Willem Dafoe, who stars in his last three fictions, including "Siberia" (2019).
For the Austrian director, screenwriter and producer Hubert Sauper (Kitzbühel, 1966), independent documentary film is one of the "last bastions" of true freedom of expression. Precisely, his cinema of reality is characterized by explicitly capturing political and social controversies. His documentary “Darwin's Nightmare” (2005) denounced the commercial exploitation of Nile perch in Tanzania.
Trained as a mathematician, but forged as a filmmaker, the Ukrainian (of Belarusian origin) Sergei Loznitsa (Baranovichi, 1964) has devoted his filmography to the history of the Soviet Union, its legacy, impact and influence in Europe. Along this path, it has been characterized by blurring the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Titles such as "Maidan" (2014), "The Event" (2015), "The Process" (2018) and "State Funeral" (2019) stand out in his work.
